Allan Wasonga, Agape Academy Chess Lead Coach
Our Chess Club was started by Allan Wasonga over five years ago as a safe space for girls in Kibera to stay engaged, learn discipline, and avoid trouble. Despite limited resources, Allan’s dedication as a volunteer has led the team to compete locally and nationally—including major tournaments in Nairobi—where they have proudly won several titles.

Our SMART Goal:

To fosters ethical leadership, strategic thinking, and digital fluency. by empowering young learners in Kibera through a dynamic curriculum that blends chess, civic education, coding, data analytics, and foundational AI literacy rooted in Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Curriculum Integration & After-School Program:
We are extending chess into the 4th grade curriculum and launching an after-school certification program open to the wider community.

Dr Gerri Light, International Partner for Curriculum & Coach Development
Dr. Gerri Light works closely with Allan Wasonga, Agape Administration, & Spring-Forth Academy to strengthen and expand our chess program. Together, they are developing a curriculum that integrates chess into broader learning goals, providing training for educators, and connecting our coaches to certification opportunities. She also helps secure resources and tools to ensure the program continues to grow and thrive.
Her partnership is equipping Agape students and teachers with the skills and support needed to use chess as a pathway to problem‑solving, resilience, teamwork, community engagement, and technology literacy.
